Weekend Stuff
Jul. 5th, 2014 06:37 pmLuckily with having yesterday off, I woke up relatively early (still slept in though) and went to see a very early matinee of Snowpiercer. It was just me and one other guy in the theater, and he was using the closed captioning device, so I suspect he had hearing issues. The few bodies in the theater worried me that it was a bad movie, but it was also really early (9:50 AM) so most probably weren't out yet.
The movie is a sci-fi, post-apocalyptic story. After releasing a chemical in the atmosphere to combat global warming, a new ice age overtakes the world. The only survivors are on board a train in perpetual motion on a year-long round track. The poor are relegated to the tail of the train while the privileged are in the front. It's a simple caste system where the tail folks are abused so the front train people can live in comfort. A bearded Chris Evans plays the leader of the tail group who move up the train in the hopes of taking it over, but the stellar cast member is Tilda Swinton who plays a crazed minister named Mason, chewing up every scene that she's in.
What surprised me is how a movie that is REALLY this good is in limited release while a piece of crap like "Deliver Us From Evil" is in everything theater. The Wikipedia page for Snowpiercer says that the director and the distributor had a difference in what was cut from the movie and the distributor did limited release in retaliation. Now that it's popping up in the larger AMC theaters, I'm hoping it'll get a wider release.
So this morning, after sleeping in a LOT, I did a few odds and ends and managed to get out and get issue #14 of my comic printed. It's such a thrill holding a printed copy. I do wish I could do a mass printing, but it's just not cost effective.
