Softball Season Begins
Apr. 24th, 2013 07:07 amLast night, my team took the field for the first time at the new park where the league is playing. So far, I'm liking it. It has a real bar. Seriously.
My team is about half of last year's team and half new folks, so I was wondering how well we'd all get along and play together. We did really well. I had to answer the question about my batting helmet a few times and once to an umpire. This ump was a tall, good-looking, broad-shouldered guy, who informed me that he was a paramedic after I explained to him about the helmet and the blood-thinners. I told another teammate, "if I get conked on the head and he's giving me mouth-to-mouth, stay the heck away and let that bear do his job..."
I probably had the best hitting game of my softball career. I hit a double on my first go round, and I'd not held a bat since last season.
In my head (and sometimes out loud), I started singing Elmer Fudd's line from "What's Opera, Doc?" about a spear and "magic helmet." I'm wondering if it's reminding me of my childhood days where I had to wear them and actually batted better. Needless to say, I need to find some flames or lightning bolt stickers to put on it.
So we won both games -- one 14-13 and the other 12-7 or something like that. A great start to the season. And I got my "Miss Congeniality" trophy from last season too. It's on my bookshelf, name misspelled and everything, just like every other trophy I've ever received. It's like childhood again, only better. :)
Happy Hump Day!
