When I draw my cartoons, I generally just outline in ink, using a Sharpie or whatever, over the pencils of the drawing. It gets the job done as I tend to add more 3D aspects in coloring. However, I've been reading a lot of black and white comics where the inking is relied on heavily to add dimension and I realized my inking skills are sorely lacking. So I looked up some books on comic book inking, but rather than buy them, I decided to hit the local library.
Not sure why it never strikes me to go to the library, especially since I worked in one for three years, but it skips my mind. Our local library is relatively new and well designed. I found the inking books on the shelves and went walking around. Oh, the cute furry guys in the library! Most of them were using the computers to surf the web, but I saw at least a half-dozen that I'd love to take home with me (not necessarily all at once... though it's an interesting thought). I may need to go to the library more often.
I read one of the books so far and the art of inking is truly under-appreciated. When several inkers worked on copies of the same pencil sketch, the results were dynamically different. No single work was right or wrong, as each added personal touches and elements to the drawing.
So I finished drawing the last page of issue #9 last night, a record turn around I think for me. I'll be using some newly-learned inking skills on this comic. I drew the last pages watching two episodes of "Elementary" that were on my DVR. I'm loving this new Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Liu as Dr. Watson is a stroke of new-idea genius. It will probably become my favorite new show of the season. Sadly, I wont get to see a new episode for two weeks because I think due to the Vice-Presidential debate. I wont watch that, but I'll try to watch the "South Park" episode where the kids have to choose a new mascot, between a giant douche and a turd sandwich instead. :)
