Megamind and 3D Movies
Nov. 8th, 2010 08:30 pmOn Saturday, after my usually lunchtime stop at Qdoba Mexican Grill, I decided to catch a matinee of Megamind. There was a 3D and 2D version showing, but I went ahead and forked out the money for the 3D because the 2D didn't start for an hour.
When Megamind and Metro Man rocket from their prospectively doomed planets toward Earth, the two of them immediately start a rivalry. While Metro Man grows up to be loved and popular, Megamind is less successful and disliked, leading him to embrace his destiny as a super-villain. When he manages to finally take over the city, he learns that being the ruler isn't as fun as the actual fights between him and the hero, so he invents a new hero only to find the tables turned on him.
As far as superhero cartoons (ahem.. okay.. animated features) go, it's very entertaining. Will Ferrell and Tina Fey play great characters and I even could stomach Jonah Hill in the movie. The action sequences are fun, the animation is cool, and I love the writing.
The only negative that I can pinpoint is the 3D aspect. While I admit that it is visually cool, I also find that I tend to forget it's in 3D until something specific points it back out to me. I always thought that the novelty of 3D is that things looked like they were coming out at you, to surprise you, which is why is was also so good for horror movies. However, in the cases for a lot of current movies, it really isn't needed I think and it makes me wonder if everyone is filming things in 3D so they can charge more money for it.
Overall, I think this movie would have been just as good to be in 2D instead of 3D, so I wouldn't spend the extra money really.
