Two Movies -- Coraline & Friday the 13th
Feb. 13th, 2009 03:41 pmI went to the movies last night with
cubtharsis. After chatting over a quick bite and then standing at the movie kiosk, we decided we felt more like something lighter than "Milk," so we went to see Coraline in 3D. Lonely and largely ignored by her parents, Coraline explores her new home discovering a small door that leads to a magical world where her "other" parents provide anything she wants. However, she soon realizes that everything comes at a price and her "other" parents aren't keen on letting her go. The animation is odd, but very visually appealing, part CGI and I would swear part stop-action animation. The story is somewhat creepy, somewhat suggestive in parts, and overall incredible. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would see it again. I am not sure I'd buy the DVD as I don't see me watching over and over again, but I would recommend it to others.
I took today off because I wanted to see the Friday the 13th remake and I wanted a day off. I really don't need to go into story -- mom kills counselors after the let son Jason drown, he returns and starts hacking up young, beautiful people, etc. The standard horror rule apply -- drinking, drug use, and/or sex leads to death. The acting was much better than I expected and the story had some very interesting twists. Like the "My Bloody Valentine" remake, this version keeps enough of the original to make it a true remake, but adds enough unique elements to make it stand alone. I enjoyed it and would see it again. It'll make its way to my DVD collection.
