Reminiscing about the Cotton-Eyed Joe
Jul. 18th, 2006 06:12 pmThe other day I bought a used CD of Rednex's "Sex & Violins" with the last of my Amazon gift certificate. I'd heard this CD years ago and I love their rendition of the "Cotton-Eyed Joe."
When
bleuvalentines and I were in the 3rd grade, we were part of the May Day festival. Every year, the elementary students would perform a dance, with each grade (or couple of grades) performing something different. That year, we were doing the Cotton-Eyed Joe. Now it wasn't this particular song, but the melody is about the same and it brings back fun memories. Mostly because this was the first (and only) time I had two girls fight over me.
In the dance, students were put into quartets, two couples of boys and girls. She and I were paired up with a girl named Penny and a boy named Leland. Leland was a gangly boy and often had hygiene problems (he was a little boy remember). Neither Penny nor
bleuvalentines wanted to be Leland's partner, so I recall a disagreement between the girls on who got to dance with me. I was flattered, but considering my competition, I know I was the lesser of two evils. Penny lost out and had to dance with Leland.
Sadly, there are no pictures of this event (the dance not the disagreement). I'm sure we were disgustingly cute in cowboy hats.
