Welcome to Silent Hill
Before I pulled a Rip Van Winkle yesterday, I cut out of work a bit early and caught a matinee of Silent Hill.
A mother named Rose takes her sleepwalking daughter to an abandoned town that she dreams about called Silent Hill in an attempt to find out why she is having her problems. People and places in Silent Hill are not always what they seem to be as her daughter vanishes and Rose must face monsters and religious zealots to find her.
Overall, I thought the movie was great. It was a bit slow in the beginning and I think they went a bit too fast in the explanation of things at the end. The special effects were beautiful, some truly creepy monsters. My favorite were "dark nurses," buxom nurses with masked faces and sharp implements whose jerky motions made me think of Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" video (don't ask me why). The ending left me a bit puzzled as it wasn't entirely clear what happened there. Though, a movie that makes you wonder afterwards isn't necessarily a bad thing.
No talking teenagers, just one guy who fell asleep and snored a couple of rows behind me. No other bizarre distractions. I loved it. Thank heavens for "R" ratings.
Did I enjoy the movie? I liked it.
Would I see it again? Maybe.
Buy the DVD? The jury is still out on that.
