Sheer Idiocy

Another reason to be happy that I no longer live in Kansas City:

Kansas School Board OK's Evolution Change

How does one "rewrite" the definition of science? Being a scientist myself, I find this decision disturbing and if I were in high school I would take every opportunity to scoff at it in class.

I notice that the news article didn't bother to state what the new definition of "science" was. Can't help but wonder what was wrong with the old definition . . .

[identity profile] kybearfuzz.livejournal.com 2005-11-08 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I glean from the story, they have to change their definition of "science," to allow the idea of intelligent design, where there is no scientific basis.

Kansas City isn't in Kansas, sugarplum :)

[identity profile] kybearfuzz.livejournal.com 2005-11-08 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL.. sorry, dear, but you're wrong. There are two Kansas City's, one in KS and one in MO. The state line actually divides the greater city. It took a while for that idea to sink in when I lived there.

[identity profile] cincycub.livejournal.com 2005-11-08 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
WOW, I truly had no idea!

[identity profile] cincycub.livejournal.com 2005-11-08 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes yes, I'm stupid, let's move on ;)

[identity profile] gearjock.livejournal.com 2005-11-09 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Not neccessarily, we have no proof Kansas City was not created by a devine force and then luddites divided it into two pieces, one loving God but hating science, the other loving science and therfore able to perfect a scientific method for great BBQ!

[identity profile] prisonbitch.livejournal.com 2005-11-08 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
honestly, if i lived in kc, ks and had kids in public school
i'd pack up and move across the state line

[identity profile] kybearfuzz.livejournal.com 2005-11-08 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
When I lived in KCKS (or actually one of the 'burbs), I remember how everyone said the school system was better, more progressive on the Kansas side versus the Missouri side. I'm sure the MO side is loving this now.

And yet again, no mention of educating the masses to the intelligent Design of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, may you be forever touched by his noodly appendage! They shall regret their decision! May all of their noodle dishes turn soggy and over cooked! May their ramen taste of fish heads and bile! may their meatballs never fully cook and/or retain their glorious likeness of the Flying Spaghetti Monster!!!!!

LOL.. I have heard of the FSM :)

May the Pasta be with you :D

As someone who was not allowed to learn evolution because I was forced to go to a baptist high school (long story)... I find this very disturbing.

[identity profile] kybearfuzz.livejournal.com 2005-11-10 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
OMG! You went to a Baptist high school??? Now that is disturbing!

[identity profile] mississippicub.livejournal.com 2005-11-10 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
very much so... especially for a catholic boy... :op

[identity profile] cmorley.livejournal.com 2005-11-09 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Man... I just... *shakes head*

I really worry that in 10-20 years, once this current generation grows up and enters the workforce, that we'll be a nation of idiots. Between this anti-science double talk of Intellecutal Design, 10 years of neo-cons ripping about the "intellectual elite", and the sight of so many tech jobs being sent overseas, no kid in his/her right mind would want to study science. We're imposing a brain drain on ourselves, and that's going to make us, frankly, unable to compete with the rest of the world.

I really want to read "The Republican War on Science" by Chris Mooney

[identity profile] kybearfuzz.livejournal.com 2005-11-10 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
It is disturbing that people are dismissing science so easily. I sincerely hope that the rest of the country doesn't follow Kansas' decision. If only we could get a liberal president next term!

'new'

[identity profile] aceofspace.livejournal.com 2005-11-10 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
All I can think of is how the 'new math' was going to revolutionize teaching, and broaden our students intellect. Well, now we have a generation that is math illiterate! I know this is a broader debate, but maybe the damage will stay in Kansas...

Re: 'new'

[identity profile] kybearfuzz.livejournal.com 2005-11-10 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh Geez! I had forgotten about the "new math" crap they tried out... I hope and pray this fizzles out soon.

[identity profile] bookish-cub.livejournal.com 2005-11-09 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
Just wait...in a few more years there won't be any more science at all.

[identity profile] kybearfuzz.livejournal.com 2005-11-10 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I dread seeing the witch burnings again for causing sticks to burst into flames (we now call them matches)... I swear that looks like what we are heading towards.

aaaahhhhhhhh

[identity profile] aceofspace.livejournal.com 2005-11-10 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
It's bad enough that our high school graduates are biased against science as it is, and this isn't going to help any. We'll never keep our technology edge this way. Even the FRENCH are better at separation of church and state than we are, and our country was founded on the idea!

Sorry--just a little perturbed at the moment...

I keep waiting for people to get back the idea that the Earth is the center of the universe again.

[identity profile] sweetjimmyto.livejournal.com 2005-11-09 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I realize I am preaching to the choir here, however, there has to be seperation of church and state. I think some minds have to open up in the United States and realize that we live on a great big planet, with many cultures and religions. In the realm of public domain, we have to open ourselves up to a more secular approach. If you want to send your kids to Sunday School or Hebrew School or Ramadan U, that's up to the individual family.

If it brings some peace to your day, I think embracing faith and practicing religion are wonderful things. However, it's not something we should force down other peoples' throats.

[identity profile] kybearfuzz.livejournal.com 2005-11-10 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Well, at least you live in a sane country!
