Another day on the road. The flight to DC was good, on time, nearly perfect. Took the Metro to the hotel. Everything familiar came back to me, as I had been to DC several times since 1998 for work. I’ve seen the sights, but now if feels very comfortable traveling around here.

After I dropped off my bags at the hotel, I hopped back on the Metro and headed to DuPont Circle, also known comically as the Fruit Loop. Yeah, it’s the gay area of town, but it’s also the artsy area of town. The last time I was there I was in the closet and cautious about letting friends think I wanted to be there. Stupid, I know. So I wanted to hit some of the gay bookstores I had passed up before.

DuPont Circle is a very nice area. Couples of all types were holding hands in public, the smell of different restaurants and coffee in the air, and people just lying around in the parks, reading books on blankets or just talking with friends. If I lived anywhere in DC, I think I would pick this place. It makes you wish the entire world was this way.

The bookstore was buzzing. The place was full of people. They have some great tee-shirts, posters, books, jewelry, etc. Rainbow motif, leather, and the rest one would expect. The store had all four Leonard & Larry paperbacks, which I was tempted to buy even though I already have them all. I did find a magazine (**wink wink**) I wanted and found a copy of “Alec Baldwin Doesn’t Love Me” by Michael Thomas Ford, a gay humorist. I bought this as a lark and it’s one of the funniest things I’ve read in some time. People on the Metro ride back to the hotel were staring at me because I’d occasionally chuckle.

I could have spent tons of money, but I didn’t want to blow my entire per diem the first day. I may go back later this week. I’m glad I went, head held high, eyes lit in amazement.

Well, class starts tomorrow. I’m trying to keep it positive, because I’m thinking this class will stink. I know the instructor from work and his ego will be difficult to ignore, because there’s so much of it. Oh well, the hotel has happy hour in the early evenings, so I’m sure I can find ways to forget it….
