I played football in high school. Though my school was small enough that about anybody that wanted to play could play. Those who chose not to, were not bullied or treated badly. It was understood that there were just certain kids that could not do it. Sounds weird doesn't it? Though I have come to hate my hometown for their unspoken intolerance and bigotry. I had a great time playing football. In fact, that is the only thing I miss from high school. There was something about getting your aggression out on big bully types that was so satisfying. :)
Having said that, and being from Iowa, our Wrestling program was exactly the opposite. If you quit, you were branded a quitter et al. And I hated wrestling. But I was forced to do it for 10 years. Second grade on through graduation every Saturday and yo yo weight loss. I blame that for my bad eating habits to this day.
Sorry you had to endure that. It seems we still teach intolerance at a young age and it is very sad.
High school sports can go both ways.
