Still on the Road in EKY

I left Ashland and drove the meandering roads of Eastern Kentucky from one small town to another. I kept my small digital camera in the car for any sights of interest along the way. I always know I'm in the country by the things I see and hear everywhere. In some cases it's funny, but it can also be a bit scary.

Post Office, Tool Shed or Outhouse?
REALLY Small Post Office

I spotted this place along the way. I was amazed how tiny this post office was. It's an honest-to-goodness post office. The hours posted on the doors are "Monday through Saturday 8:00 to 10:00," so it's only open limited hours. The other little sign states that this is a smoke-free building.

Li'l Abner's Motel
Li'l Abner Motel -- Where Daisy Mae Will Cook Ya Breakfast

I thought this sign for a motel was a hoot. So much that I had to snap a photo of it. You should be careful of laughing at these things, karma paid me back by making me stay at "Abner's Motel" in Stanford, KY last night. Abner's is Li'l Abner's other location and was the ONLY place to stay there. It wasn't much, but it was clean. Being the only motel in town, I guess it serves as both the "no-tell, motel" and the only "4-star" in the town.

When I asked the lady at the front desk, who I'm sure was Mrs. Abner, if the rooms had internet access, she replied that "No, I think most people bring their own internet with them..." Umm... okay... :D

I did get the chance to stop by my college roommate's house. He lives a few miles up the road from Stanford. He's going gray, but is still a very handsome bear of a guy. He and his lovely wife now have FOUR kids, three well-behaved boys and one brand-new baby girl. It makes me feel very old. It was good to see him again.

Grab an Ale-8-One
An Ale-8-One Soft Drink Machine

I always know when I'm in the Mount Sterling, KY area because I see the Ale-8-One machines everywhere instead of the usual Coca-Cola and Pepsi machines. Ale-8-One (or "A Late One") is a regional soft drink, like a flat moutain dew, but full of sugar and tons of caffeine. They got me through a lot of nights in college. There is a diet version, but I can't imagine it would taste all that great.

A Gay Old Road
Welcome to Gay Road in Eastern KY

I saw this street sign in a small KY town. It was not paved with yellow bricks and I didn't see Judy Garland.

Other points of interest:
  • I drove through Bruin, KY and saw the "Bruin Body Shoppe." I wonder if that's where they get the burly bears in shape :)
  • Overheard on the radio: "There will be a coon hunt this weekend..."
  • The Primative Baptist Church... 'nuff said
  • I was waited on at a McDonald's by a server named "Bunny"
  • On a morning radio show, there was a old lady calling in to complain that the TV station affiliated with the radio station had removed her favorite show, "Walker, Texas Ranger." It went something like this.... "Ah'm callin' in to complain to the Programmin' Departmunt. You've taken awf mah shows on Saturday nights. Ah want Walker, not the Jap-AN-ease Olympics you all replaced it with. Put Walker ohn!"

And from the "it's a small world" department, I was walking into Applebee's in Mt. Sterling, KY today for lunch only to be met by [livejournal.com profile] thespisgeoff on his way out. He's doing shows in the area it seems.. and isn't feeling well. Hope all went well...

Luckily, I'm staying at a hotel tonight where they have wireless internet.. because I forgot to bring mine with me. :)

heheh those are some interesting pics. The Gay Rd is priceless! In Illinios, we have a town called Gays and it's known for having the world's only 2 story outhouse. It's like a historical landmark!

Now that is a great historical landmark :)

.. and funny enough, I have a second picture of a "Gay St" but figured it would be redundant to post both...

Aww come on, we wanna see it!

This is heelarious. One of my fellow co-workers has been going to work near Ashland Kentucky the past week or so, and I sent him the picture of the post office. I'm sure he'll get a kick out of it.

LOL.. when I saw that post office, I literally had to turn the car around to go back for that picture..

Don't laugh...Greg's a recovering Primative Baptist. EEEk.

You have such interesting travel karma. Or maybe you just crossed over into another universe and didn't realize it.

Ah, poor Greg, I do feel his pain... I'm a recovering Baptist too...

Fun pics and stories. My questions is...Does anyone worry that Lil' Abners is so close to the Reptile Zoo? I think they could make that .6 miles pretty quickly! ;)

[identity profile] kybearfuzz.livejournal.com 2006-01-12 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, that was one of the reasons (beside the honor of staying in a place called "Li'l Abner's") that I didn't stop. Knowing my luck, there would be too good of a chance of a snake getting loose and finding its way to my motel room.

How interesting! Small town life, especially down your way can be quite interesting to say the least.

Back in I think the 60's, my parents stopped by a roadside sign for a town call Enigma. :-) We have a slide of it to prove it too!

[identity profile] kybearfuzz.livejournal.com 2006-01-12 10:36 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, we do have some odd sounding town names around here. :)

I'm from Harlan, KY. I feel your pain.

[identity profile] kybearfuzz.livejournal.com 2006-01-12 10:36 am (UTC)(link)
LOL... thanks :)

Post office.....or outhouse? Hmmmmmm....

L'il Abner's looks kind of familiar, but it's been such a long time since I've been down that way. Too funny.

Post office .... or outhouse?

Let's just hope no one gets the two confused. The post master would probably rather they smoke in the building than use it as an outhouse. :)

Are you traveling for fun or work?

[identity profile] kybearfuzz.livejournal.com 2006-01-12 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL.. traveling for work, but trying to have fun when I can :)

[identity profile] hankbear.livejournal.com 2006-01-12 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for sharing! You'd sure be a fun traveling companion. Now that I've read behind the cuts, I get your last comment!!
