Female Heroes as Male Heroes

The other night, while watching yet another bad horror movie, I was doodling on my sketchpad. I was drawing a male figure and I suddenly wondered what he would look like dressed in Wonder Girl's classic costume. Some female heroes wear skimpy outfits that don't look good if worn by a male counterparts. Can you imagine a guy in Wonder Woman's bustier? Yeah, it comes off as pure cross-dresser.

However, some of them are not so bad. I drew a couple and colored them to see how they'd look.

Wonder Guy

Wonder Girl's classic outfit actually looks like it could be a decent man's costume. Of course, I took some artistic liberty in giving him a beard and a hairy chest, but then it is how I'd see him. After seeing how this one turned out, I questioned how a male "Starfire" would look. And...

Starfire of sorts

This one doesn't look so great. Starfire's armored bikini doesn't fit a male hero as well, though I do think it could have possibilities with a bit of redesign. As it stands, the male, bearish Starfire looks like a cross between Hagrid, Grizzly Adams, and some 70's glam rock star. However, I am impressed that I remembered the costume completely from memory.

I may try another some time.

You're impressed. I'm scared.

Yeah, the male Starfire (never heard of her...) does remind me of Barry Gibb.

Night fever, night fever...

My memory catches some unusual details of things, I know.

Of course, you did .... :)

Heh...

nice job on the Starfire costume. If I remember right, didn't her brother Ryandr wear one almost exactly the same, eliminating the is it really a girls outfit question? Or am I just mixing my 80s memories up? In any case, your version wears it very well.

I think the Wonder Girl one would look better in her later star field pattern, though I guess it would just look like a slightly skimpier version of Star Boy.

My recollection from seeing him in the Teen Titans book was that he wore essentially shorts and the neck plate, but he may have worn something more in the "Omega Man" series.

I love the starfield outfit, but I have to admit that when I think of Wonder Girl, I always come back to this red outfit.

That's some pretty awesome awesomeness right there, is what that is... [nods]

Wow!

As for WW's classic bustier look, how about a white tank-top with the pecs area done up in her classic stylized eagle "boob-toob" colours/style? Just a thought... :-)

Thanks!

And it's something to consider. When I was drawing these, I tried to keep them to the original costumes without modifying them beyond how they fit the characters' bodies.

I think Wonder Woman's costume could be made to look very masculine actually.

I love both illustrations!

They would make excellent additions to Grizzly & the Bear Patrol, yes?

I'd enjoy putting Wonder Guy in the mix, but I'm sure copyright infringement would stop that.

Oh, yeah- I forgot about that-but you maybe could change the outfit and name a bit?

It's just a suggestion. :)

These are cool re-imaginings. More please!

Love that!

Bear Starfire looks like a beefy version of the love child between Grizzly Adams and Doug Henning.

I had a huge thing for Grizzly Adams. Did you know that the actor who played him (Dan Hegerty) was in Muscle Beach Party, the Frankie Avalon/Annette film? He was one of the bodybuilders.

Thanks! I had a crush on Dan Haggerty too. I always wished he'd go about shirtless on "Grizzly Adams," but he never did.
