WWZ, CMC, and Other Things

Friday night, I went to see "World War Z" on my own. The theater was maybe 1/3 full at the 7 PM showing, which I later found was the optimal time to go see "Monsters University" based on the number of kids in the hall when I got out. WWZ was pretty good, not really the typical zombie fair as there really wasn't much gore, some decent make-up effects, and some cool action scenese. Instead of viewing it as a horror movie, I likened it to an action/disaster movie. Not much in common with the book, but on its own it was entertaining.

Saturday night, I went to see the Cincinnati Mens Chorus Pride concert. It really was beautifully done with some wonderful musical choices. This was the first concert where it was narrated on stage(by a local friend), with each historical fact about the fight for gay rights leading into the song of choice. It really tied everything together and made it highly enjoyable. One of the best parts is seeing Brian ([livejournal.com profile] cincycub) on stage in the front. Over the years, I am guessing I've learned to pick his voice out of the chorus. I do enjoy hearing him sing.

Speaking of singing, I was goofing off online and found a YouTube video of Joey Scarbury singing "Believe It or Not" on Solid Gold. Unlike most guest singers who just lip synched a pre-recorded track, he sang live and he was amazing. I've always wondered why a man with such an amazing voice never seemed to hit it big after this song. He sang some sitcom openings, like the short-lived show "Jennifer Slept Here" which I listened to on YouTube as well. I have his one available solo album on my iPod and I love it. Knowing he was still kicking, I decided to look to see if he's performing or writing. Sadly, I found he's in charge of sales at a Lexus dealership in Texas. I bet he's still got the voice, but too bad he's not recording. A man's gotta eat I'm sure.

The music business is such a crapshoot. Sad that he's selling cars rather than recording songs.

Hopefully he's doing well and can still record on the side. I would love to hear a new CD from him. I marvel at his natural singing voice.

It sounds like you had a good weekend. I imagine the trouble is that there are a lot of singers out there and the market is only so big. Too many talented people, sadly.

Well, while I thought he was a good looking bear, I can imagine that most teenagers wouldn't go for him when there were guys like Andy Gibb running around. As much as we don't like to admit it, the performing world is very look-centric. It's just a shame to see such a talented guy not be the star he should be.
