Pirate Radio

Pirate Radio
The Count and Dr. Dan in Pirate Radio

I've had Pirate Radio on Netflix DVD at my home for over a week. I really had wanted to see it in the theaters, but I just didn't get around to it when it was released. Tonight, I finally managed to settle down and see it.

The story involves a crew of misfit DJ's playing rock and roll music in 1966 Britain. The pirate radio group broadcasts from a boat in the North Sea until bureaucrats work on getting a law passed prohibiting such radio. It views like a mix of Animal House and British Rock Movies of the 1960's. It stars a bearded Philip Seymour Hoffman and a lengthy scene with a naked, furry Nick Frost.

While the movie didn't do well at the theater, I thought it was pretty entertaining and has a fantastic soundtrack of 60's rock music. Definitely worth the rental.

I enjoyed it too (along with the fun Frosty nekkidness). It may be one to buy.

I LURRRRRVE this movie - there's something quintessentially British about so many of the characters that make them endearing rather than caricaturish. Plus you're right, the soundtrack is fantastic...not to mention the pause-repeat-pause-repeat-pause-repeat-able scene with the charming Mr Frost sans clothes ;)

Oh interesting, it's called The Boat That Rocked here...not sure why they felt they had to change the title for the US release.

I agree, there is something that is uniquely British about some of the characters that I loved so much.

And I don't know why they decide to change titles for British films here. I just watched "Nanny McPhee Returns" here on DVD and found it was called "Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang" in Britain. I like the British title better.

Nanny McPhee is one of my guilty secrets - when JR isn't home (and I know he won't be home for a while) I put in a Nanny McPhee DVD and lie back and relax *sigh*
