Bear Seasons: Summer

Bear of SummerBack before I started posting the "seasons" cartoons, I thought about who would approach to use as the models for it. Ed ([livejournal.com profile] njbearcub1) was the first I thought of when it came to the "Summer" cartoon. So I emailed and asked him and was thrilled that he was okay with me doing this.

I thought of different images to use, most of them involved him sunbathing. While I liked this idea (and I wager that most of us would), I was having trouble showing the mythic influence over the season that the other season toons have had so far. The early drafts just didn't work. So I decided to depict him having some summer fun I remember from youth. Is he reaching for the sun or putting it up in the air himself?

In retrospect, I should have drawn him shirtless. I'm sure it would have made the cartoon much better! :)

Big hugs, handsome!

Nice! I very much enjoyed this and also being able to stroll through your Flickr stream and see all the other work you've created. Do you have a website where all of your work is stashed? I'd love to see more...

Well, thanks! And howdy!

I don't have a website where all the work is stashed, except maybe for this one. I post cartoons on here from time to time. The best way to look at them is to hit the "toon" tag at the bottom of this entry and it should take you back to all the past ones.

Marvelous - great concept, beautifully done! I think the hint of burly chest and that luxuriant blond beard are plenty enticing ... inviting the imagination gives the picture special allure ;0)

At first I was a little disappointed, in that the first one in the series, the winter portrait, was so formal and stately, like he was the true elemental spirit of winter, and the autumn portrait was likewise mythic, if not so formal. This one is so casual, like he's just some guy having fun at the lake. But the "holding the sun" is what made it for me -- the season of summer isn't formal and stately, it's casual and fun. He's holding the sunshine of summer right in his hands.

Well done, and looking forward to spring.

Shirtlessness makes everything better!

Still, he's a very handsome bear. I love his expression, and the fullness of his golden beard.

Beautiful work, like always!
