Movies.. Movies.. Movies...
The last couple of nights, the Oxygen channel (yes, I'm gay) has been playing The Others, the Nicole Kidman supernatural thriller from 2001. I have always enjoyed this movie as the atmosphere and suspense were done so well that it sent chills without any gore whatsoever. Kidman is incredible and Fionnula Flanagan as the creepy Mrs. Mills should have been *at least* nominated for an Oscar.
As this is "Friday" for a lot of us, here's some questions to answer as I'm always on the lookout for movies to watch:
As this is "Friday" for a lot of us, here's some questions to answer as I'm always on the lookout for movies to watch:
- What is your favorite scary movie? Horror movie?
- Your favorite comedy movie?
- Action flick?
- Romantic film?
- Independent or quirky movie?
- Guilty Pleasure?
- The Movie You're Embarrassed to Admit You Like?
- I love The Fog (1980) and Black Christmas (1974), but I admit that The Orphanage (2007) ranks up there as a fave scary movie.
- I can watch The Birdcage and Steel Magnolias over and over again. Everyone in my family thinks the latter is depressing, but there are some truly TRULY funny lines in that movie.
- Definitely Hot Fuzz
- I'm not much of a romantic movie guy, but I love While You Were Sleeping with Sandra Bullock.
- Not sure I'd call it a favorite, but for some reason Lars and the Real Girl comes to mind for this one.
The Incredibles... Van Helsing and Underworld- A complete chick flick, but I adore Practical Magic.

Movies......
2. "The Princess Bride" :-)
3. I'd pick "The Bourn *" for a series in action. I loved all of them.
4. "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" something about not giving up the thought of someone touches me.
5. I don't know if it would qualify but "Sliding Doors" comes to mind.
6. Guilty Pleasure? "Adventures in Babysitting" ;-)
7. Tomb Raider...LOL

1. Scream still stands out for me as being one of the most original, genre-affecting "scary movies" out there.
2. There are so many... but Mean Girls never gets old.
3. Mission Impossible. Isn't that awful?
4. Serendipity. I can pretend it's about me and Jeremy Piven!
5. American Beauty.
6. Trick. It's gratuitous but sweet.
7. The Pirate Movie. OMG, it's delicious.
Why is The Incredibles a guilty pleasure? It's a great movie!
The "This Kiss" scene in Practical Magic is one of my favorite movie scenes EVER.

And I just can watch Practical Magic over and over... I love the older aunts and how each generation seems to have one red head and one brunette as a set of sisters.
Sadly, with the state of his hairless chest, I have nearly given up on dear Jeremy Piven... Jeffrey Dean Morgan (http://z.about.com/d/movies/1/0/Y/X/Q/fredclausprem10.jpg) is currently courting me as my celebrity love.

2. "Hitch"
3. The "Bourne" series

5. "Dancer, TX" and "Amelie"
6. "Steel Magnolias" and "Big"
7. Way too many to name :-)

Sandra Oh and Kate Walsh play a lesbian couple way before "Gray's Anatomy".
If you don't like it, don't yell at me :-)

I am not a fan of the horror movie genre, but a favorite of mine was a 1980s movie called "April's Fools Day!". Although its also a sci-fi movie, I love the original "Alien" too.
2. Your favorite comedy movie?
This is a hard one to pick. I love so many comedies from "Airplane" to "Top Secret" to a lot of Monty Python. I'd have to go with "Young Frankenstein" right now, although that's always subject to change.
3. Action flick?
"Final Fantasy: Advent Children." If there was ever a geek/nerd movie with crazy CGI action this was it.
4. Romantic film?
"Amelie."
5. Independent or quirky movie?
"Brazil." its not an independent movie, but its definitely "quirky." LOL. Its probably one of my favorite movies of all time. I just saw "Juno" the other night, and that is likely to be a contender once I distill it a bit more.
6. Guilty Pleasure?
"Matrix: Reloaded"
I can watch the Chateau fight again and again... and again...
7. The Movie You're Embarrassed to Admit You Like?
"The Joy Luck Club." Its probably one of the only movies that could make me cry, if I was the crying sort of person. ;-)

5. Chicago
6. Trick (suggestion stolen from
7. Air Force One
Movies I want to see are "Sex and the City" and "WALL-E".

Movies
I have so many films that I really enjoy but they are hard to catagorize. I won't say any of the films I mention are my favorites. I can share some titles that I like really well.
Personal Services Quirky film about an english Brothel From Python Terry Jones
Cold Comfort Farm Fun romp of tidying up family
Stardust Robert DiNero as you'll never expect
Forgotten Silver Early Peter Jackson (Listen to the commentary.)
Saving Grace Written by Craig Ferguson
Death at a Funeral Unexpected delight
Kinky Boots It's about Shoe Biz.
I could go on and on. I have 600-700 movies on Laser Disk and DVD.
I don't like stupid movies. They have to have a bit of wit to be appreciated. There are a few movies that I just enjoy the action scenes but they really aren't good movies. I don't want to be scared. I'm not interested in the "Gritty."
I hope you find something intersting to keep your screen glowing warm.
Re: Movies
I love Saving Grace! When the countryside lights up a night with everyone watching I chuckle. When I think of the two old store owners huddled behind the counter eating Cheerios, I laugh like crazy :)
Death at a Funeral -- Alan Tudyk is hilarious.. and looks good naked.
Kinky Boots is a remarkable movie! I have many of the songs on my iPod :)
Re: Movies
I didn't mention the foreign films with subtitles. (I did see one British film with such heavy dialects that it required subtitles.) There is a whole raft of those if you can read fast enough. Top on that list is "Tampopo" which is Japanese and "Women on the Verge of a Nervious Breakdown" which is Spanish. You, no doubt, have seen BearCub. Most of my friends are too nervous to sit and watch subtitled films.
The action films that I watch for the chase scenery is "The Transporter" and "The Italian Job." "The Transport" has one hell of a hot scene fighting in oil. The Italian Job has a lot of great stunts and fast action with Cooper Minis but both have predictable plots and are just as good with the sound off.
I've been dissapointed with "Gay" films. Most are too bitchy to be good. The best are none too good. Someone mentioned "Trick" I liked that. "A beautiful thing" is a sweet movie. I watched "Prisilla, queen of the desert" yesterday. I find it more bitching that I would like. (Elron does Abba.) I can't stand bitchyness. I am so "over" "Boys in the Band."
If you haven't discovered it, you need to see "The Five Thousand Fingers of Dr. T." It's a Dr. Suess Movie from the 1950's that is the most camp thing on film. It stars Hans Conreid. You will recognize his voice if not his face.
Unfortunately, I can seldom get anyone to come and watch movies with us. Everyone is too busy, or like you live too far away.
