Alvin and the Chipmunks

Theodore, Alvin and Simon
Alvin and the Chipmunks

I burned a bit of leave today and took in a matinee of Alvin and The Chipmunks. I was a big fan of the cartoon in the 1980's and heard the "Witch Doctor" song long before that thanks to my mom's 45 records.

When their tree is cut down for an office Christmas tree, Alvin, Simon, and Theodore end up sneaking home with a struggling songwriter named David Seville, played by Jason Lee. Once discovered in his house, the chipmunks surprise Dave with their singing ability and their ability to talk, which inspires him to write new music. The Chipmunks of course hit it big with their Christmas song and "Witch Doctor."

I liked the movie, but I am very biased and it probably wont appeal to most adults, but I am sure the kids will love it. I also think Jason Lee is fun to watch, but he's not the greatest actor in the world, but then this isn't Shakespeare. The familiar songs get a modern tune up and they even do a few renditions of some popular hits. There is no bonus scene at the end of the credits, but the credits were fun to watch as they show album covers from the 1950's to present, which shows the evolution of their appearance from the beginning to now.

Did I enjoy the movie? Yes.
Would I see it again? Yes.
Buy the DVD? Very likely, especially if I catch it on sale.

I think I'd like the movie too (when it's released to DVD). They did sing their Christmas song, right?

When David went looking for the boys, did you notice the house number? The house number was 1958, thats the year they were created.

As a kid I can remember when my mom would bring out the Christmas records, and the Chipmunks was one of them (along with Burl Ives & Gene Autry to name a few).

I'm glad I dragged myself to see it. Not sure if I will get it on dvd, but I would tell others it's worth seeing

I didn't notice that, but if I see it again, I'll look.

I remember the "Witch Doctor" song more than the Christmas one for some reason.

I'm glad to hear something positive about this one. My memories of the chipmunks have always been fond and I've been wanting to see this one...Do you happen to remember the animated movie they were in along with the Chipettes where they were in a race around the country...I think as a kid growing up I watched that movie close to a hundred times.

Oh I used to watch the cartoon from the 1980's all the time. I think I saw the movie a few times too. The Chipettes were fun too... Britney (very prophetic there), Jeannette, and Elanor... :)
