30 Days of Night

30 Days of Night
Danny Huston as the vampire leader in 30 Days of Night

I've not actually been to the movies for a couple of weeks, nothing has made me want to go. I certainly couldn't pass up a vampire movie though, and I thought 30 Days of Night was a great flick.

As a month of night falls on the distant city of Barrow, Alaska, strange things begin to happen as the town is slowly cut off from leaving or communicating. The vampires then attack, not fearing the dawn that wont be coming for 30 days. No spoilers beyond that, but it's very fast paced and has a good balance of spooky atmosphere and bloody gore (it is a vampire movie, after all).

I'm not a fan of Josh Hartnett. His near-unmoving mask rarely seems to emote any feeling, no matter what the scene. However, I think even he did a decent job in the film. My favorite character was strangely the lead vampire, played by Danny Houston, who does evil very well and very creepy.

Did I enjoy the movie? Very much.
Watch it again? Yes.
Buy the DVD? Yes.

I am not a big fan of horror movies, but I would give this one a try.

I've heard the graphic novel it is based on is really good too, so I may have to pick that one up to see.

Just to warn you, there is a lot of blood in it, if you're not a horor fan.

Well, I don't mind the blood... don't like horror movies because mostly look fake. I like sad agonizing movies LOL

Sad and agonizing? LOL.. like what for example...? I'm always after flicks to add to the Netflix queue.

Hmm... The Hours, Six Sense, Angela's Ashes, Misery, Dolores Claiborne, Schindler's list, The piano, Facing Windows, etc.

I actually saw this yesterday and didn't overly care for it. I really like the premise, but I felt it lacked in execution. One of the best scenes though is when the vampires let loose and they are doing the overhead shot of the streets as people are getting killed. It was, for lack of a better term, a really beautiful shot. I may just pick up the graphic novel to check it out though.

I looked through the graphic novel at Borders, but I admit I didn't care for the artwork. I've heard the story is impressive though.
