Goodbye to My Old Car

My old Honda Civic
The Old Honda Civic

After I bought my new car, I sold my old one to a coworker, a single mom who wanted to buy it for her final child at home who recently turned 16. She gave me a check for the car weeks ago, but because I'd never gotten the lien release on the car title back in 2003, it's been weeks of back and forth with the County Clerk's office and the Honda Finance folks. We finally got it resolved this past week.

This morning I was Mr. Butch Mechanic. I got up early and tried my best to jump start my old car and clear the snow and ice on it. It wouldn't start, so I took the old battery out and bought a new one. It started right away which was a relief.

My coworker and her son just left with my old car. It was kinda sad to see them drive it away. I feel sentimental about that car, I've spent a lot of time in it over the years, especially when I was driving back and forth from Kansas City. It's been good to me, I hope it'll be good to them too.

i always feel a bit sad when i trade in or sell an old car. i equate it to selling off a piece of myself, my life, my history. i think that played a part of why I kept the VW this time.

I'm always amazed how attached I get to things like a car, a house or workplace. To me it does feel like a piece of myself I'm giving up.
