Cities and Towns of Kentucky

While sitting in a very dull conference call, I noted some very odd names for cities and towns on the Kentucky map in the conference room. I couldn't help jotting some of them down to share.

Cities/Towns with Animal References

Black Snakes, Monkeys Eyebrow, Rabbit Hash, Wolf Creek, Cub Run, Black Gnat, Duckers, Rooster Run, Viper

Cities/Towns with Somewhat Naughty Names

Beaver, Beaver Lick, Mud Lick, Strunk, Dykes, Fruithill, Knob Lick, Pleasureville

Cities/Towns with Lady Names

Mummie, Dot, Beulah, Susie

Names of Places You Thought Were Elsewhere

Dublin, Woodstock, Cuba, Moscow, Nevada, Buffalo, California, Canada, Paris, London, Moon, Rome, Geneva, Eygpt

.. And the Just Plain Strange

Marrowbone, Sulphur Well, Uno, Eighty Eight, Tolu, Halfway, Kayjay, Arjay, Dwarf, Sulphur, Quality, Kidds Crossing, Hi Hat, Rowdy, Wax, Cerulean, Quicksand

Who knew that the people who settled here had such strange senses of humor. :)

One of the best Canadian town names has to be Medicine Hat!

Is this directed at me? If so, thank you, and why are you apologizing?

I think he was sorry for posting off subject, but he couldn't help himself because you're so cute ;)

You forgot Versailles on the ones you thought were elsewhere. Of course you'll get corrected if you say Ver-sigh instead of Ver-sells, but that's half the charm. Right?

We have some creative state park names as well. Like Big Bone Lick State Park.

I've been to Hi Hat! It's in the eastern part of the state where Mike's dad is from.

Also, near Hi Hat is a name for your "Lady Names" category: Minnie, Ky. Also, for a "Male Names" category, nearby is David, Kentucky.

Ah, I like Minnie, KY, that was my grandmother's name.

There is also a Nancy, KY around Somerset.

You mentioned Rooster Run.... home of the biggest cock I've ever seen. It's about 5 miles from my house in Bardstown, KY. I pass by it on the drive to Louisville. :o)

In "Names of Places You Thought Were Elsewhere," you forgot to mention Lebanon, KY, which is about 10 miles from my original hometown of Springfield...which most people don't really know exists in Kentucky. haha...

HUGS! Thanks for this post.

in the "Behind the music" episode of The simpsons, they mention how they moved from Northern Kentucky to California when their show takes off.

there's also Beaver Dam, KY, which is near Central City, home of the Planet of the Apes - and the Everly Brothers...

I want to live in Rowdy, Kentucky. Although I must admit Knob Lick is a close 2nd. ;-)
