Bewitched and Other Stuff

It's been a busy week. The office has kept me running about and the IT quota time for Livejournal has kept me from reading it regularly during the day. I keep hoping the quota thing is a phase and eventually they'll forget to update something and it'll disappear.

I'll be posting the next Grizzly issue in installments. Honestly, I doubt I could keep the pieces under wraps until it was completely done.

Instead of watching movies this week, I've decided to watch Season One of Bewitched. I have to admit that in the great debate of Jeannie versus Samantha, I have always enjoyed Bewitched more. In watching the show from the start, it really was a very fun show.

I'm sure everyone can read whatever they want into the show, but I can identify with the idea of Samantha trying to be something she's not, a witch playing the role of the mortal. Most of us has had practice at that, being in the closet at one time or another. While her daily life goes about its way because of someone she loves, she proves time and again that she can never truly be something she's not. The twitching thing was fun, Dick York was the better Darrin, and Endora is a gay icon.

In other news, thank heavens it's Friday.

I loved both shows, but the camp value of Bewitched was through the roof. The show was really funny and full of innuendos.

I'm totally on the Bewitched is better side. I loved Jeannie but Bewitched huge amound of great characters, not to mention the fabulousness of Samantha herself, wins every time.

I like Jeannie, just for the boys in uniforms who often came around...

But I haven't watched either in many years.

We all wish we could be something we're not- that's why everyone can relate to Samantha so well.

I did love the odd ball cast of characters: Uncle Arthur, Aunt Clara, Cousin Serena... all fun :)

I loved Bewitched, especially all of the wonderful character actors. It was always such a treat to know that many of the actors were gay and lesbian in real life .. like Dick York, Agnes Moorhead and Paul Lynde.

Dick York was the better Darrin - yes!
and Endora is a gay icon - and yes!

and the b/w eps of the first season are the best. there was actually a sense of elegance to their lives.

and poor dick york had to quit the show due to health reasons and outlived most of the other cast.

I grew up in Salem MA when the show was first run, so it was a lot of fun to watch. It was even better when the cast came to Salem one summer to film all the "Salem" episodes.

I still enjoy both, "Bewitched" and "I Dream Of Jeannie." Of course, I have always felt that "Bewitched" was the better of the two. I was saddened to hear about the deaths of most of the major characters. I knew that the late Dick Sargent was gay, as well as the late Paul Lynde. In contrast, most of the major characters on "I Dream Of Jeannie" are still alive. Of course, I preferred J. R. Ewing to Major Anthony Nelson. Bewitched was outrageously hilarious and I was never attracted to the Air Force officers, btw. :-)

About four months ago, I finally could say that I had seen every episode of "Bewitched" ever made on commercial television......there are some great books about the show out there along with the DVDs.

Seasons One and Two are the best, in my opinion, the classic B/W shows, with the original Gladys Kravitz.

I liked both series, though like you I think I preferred Bewitched - I like your analysis of the show, keenly observed.
Incidentally, shortly before deciding to go into theatrical design, I got to see Endora (Agnes Moorehead) play the part of eccentric "Aunt Alicia" in a live Los Angeles production of Lerner & Loewe's "Gigi" . Quite memorable ...she was great!

Ah, how cool to have seen Agnes Moorehead live! I've only seen her in two other roles than Endora: her "Twilight Zone" episode and in "The Bat." She definitely had quite a presence.

That must have been very fun! I would love to go to Salem and see the bronze statue of Samantha that's there.
